Laboratory measurements of the optical properties of sea salt aerosol

چکیده

The extinction spectra of laboratory generated sea salt aerosols have been measured from 1 µm to 20 µm using a Bruker 66v/S FTIR spectrometer. Concomitant measurements include temperature, pressure, relative humidity and the aerosol size distribution. The refractive indices of the sea salt have been determined using a simple har-5 monic oscillator band model (Thomas et al., 2004) for aerosol with relative humidities between 0.1% to 100% sea salt. The resulting refractive index spectra show significant discrepancies when compared to existing sea salt refractive indices.

Physical and optical aerosol properties at the Dutch North Sea coast based on AERONET observations

Sun photometer measurements at the AERONET station at the North Sea coast in The Hague (The Netherlands) provide a climatology of optical and physical aerosol properties for the area. Results are presented from the period January 2002 to July 2003. For the analysis and interpretation these data are coupled to chemical aerosol data from a nearby station of the Dutch National Air Quality Network....

Evaluation of aerosol distribution and optical depth in the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory coupled model CM2.1 for present climate

[1] This study evaluates the strengths and weaknesses of aerosol distributions and optical depths that are used to force the GFDL coupled climate model CM2.1. The concentrations of sulfate, organic carbon, black carbon, and dust are simulated using the MOZART model (Horowitz, 2006), while sea-salt concentrations are obtained from a previous study by Haywood et al. (1999). These aerosol distribu...

Real Time Detection of Sodium in Size-Segregated Marine Aerosols

The goal of this project is to develop a new capability for the chemical characterization of marine aerosols. This involves the development of an instrument to make quantitative, near real-time sodium concentration measurements on individual size-segregated marine aerosols. The development and deployment of a single particle sodium detector would allow us to measure the size distribution of sea...

Modeling and evaluation of the global sea-salt aerosol distribution: sensitivity to emission schemes and resolution effects at coastal/orographic sites

One of the major sources of uncertainty in model estimates of the global sea-salt aerosol distribution is the emission parameterization. We evaluate a new sea-salt aerosol life cycle module coupled to the online multiscale chemical transport model NMMB/BSC-CTM. We compare 5 yr global simulations using five state-of-the-art sea-salt open-ocean emission schemes with monthly averaged coarse aeroso...

Toward a Minimal Representation of Aerosols in Climate Models: Description and Evaluation in the Community Atmosphere Model CAM5

A modal aerosol module (MAM) has been developed for the Community Atmosphere Model version 5 (CAM5), the atmospheric component of the Community Earth System Model version 1 (CESM1). MAM is capable of simulating the aerosol size distribution and both internal and external mixing between aerosol components, treating numerous complicated aerosol processes and aerosol physical, chemical and optical...
